Frogs for Life

Our Frogs for Life mission is to build a future for frogs and other wildlife.  Our projects range from:
  1. Creating awareness of frogs through social media and website material;
  2. Community presentations;
  3. Educating children through our Kindergarten and Primary School incursions

Why Frogs?
Frogs have been around for millions of years - even before the dinosaurs, so there is much to learn about their ecology and how they have been able to survive for all these years!

There are over 6,500 frog species in the world and new species are being added every year. They are a wonderfully diverse and fascinating group of animals to study! Unfortunately, nearly 1/3 of all frog species around the world are threatened with extinction http://www.iucnredlist.org/initiatives/amphibians/analysis/red-list-status
In fact, amphibians are the most threatened vertebrate (animals with a backbone) group in the world.

Amphibian conservation facts
  • One third of the world’s amphibians are at risk of extinction.
  • Almost half of the 6,000 recognised species of amphibian are declining, making it the most threatened group of vertebrates on the planet.
  • Amphibians have existed on earth for over 300 million years, yet in just two decades over 160 species are thought to have become extinct.

Why should we care if a few frogs go extinct?
We need frogs! They have an intrinsic right to exist in this world.  Furthermore, they play an important role in many ecosystems around the world as both predator and prey. Importantly, they are often used as bio-indicators or referred to as the 'canary in the mine', this is because of their thin, wet permeable skin making them highly sensitivity to their surrounding environment.  If frogs are declining globally, then this is a warning call to us that something isn't right.

Our Frogs for Life webpage contains an array of resources, fun stuff for kids and links to other great frog information websites.
